Life Lately

I've had a big shift in how I look at life lately and I have been making a conscious effort to slow down a little, take better care of myself, regain some balance and focus on making the time to really enjoy life in all of it's perfectly imperfect glory.

I've been making AND taking the time to embrace the wins we achieve along the way, no matter how big or small they are.

Whether it be crossing just one thing off our to-do-list or smashing the whole damn list, managing to get at least one of the three piles of washing folded and put away or nailing the whole lot, or just simply appreciating that although my day (week or even the year) might not have played out quite how we planned it, there are still most definitely gold nuggets worth celebrating.

Last weekend we spent an afternoon with my mum and my dad, eating and drinking and toasting the fact that my mum who was recently diagnosed with Leukaemia, has been diagnosed with a better type of leukaemia than we originally feared.

I know how ridiculously stupid that sounds - celebrating leukaemia. I mean just the word leukaemia is enough to scare the sweet baby cheeses out of you right? But given the choice of the two types she was facing, we are very happy to accept the one that had been served to us and grateful enough to realise that it is totally a win worth celebrating.

How many awesome things do we overlook in all our rushing about and busyness, things that by overlooking - we deny ourselves a reason to celebrate?

I do it all the time.

Except for yesterday.

Yesterday for a whole hour before we were due to leave for school, the kids failed to understand that the fact that my face was bright red, my eyes were all twitchy and I consistently confused their names with the dogs actually meant that I was getting more than a little fed up with them taking their God damn time when I also had a day I needed to get on with.

We were officially running late for school which meant I would be late for my meeting... which meant my whole tightly scheduled day would be screwed before it even began. But as luck would have it, I had the fastest school run ever with next to no traffic or dithering people on the roads and not only did I make up the lost time, I even had time to stop and grab a coffee on my way to my first meeting.

The old me would have gulped down that coffee and busied myself stressing about what I needed to do next.

The new and on the road to being improved me, took the time to actually sit down at a table and drink that coffee in peace and quiet and I spent a precious few minutes just sitting and being and engaging in a little people watching.

In other words I celebrated the win, no matter how small it was.

What I have found is that the way that this whole 'law of attraction' and 'attitude breeds gratitude' deal works is that; the more I take the time to appreciate and celebrate the smaller wins and the little things in life - the more things worth celebrating and feeling grateful for miraculously come my way.

The more I allow myself to stress or get swept away by the hiccups, the more life chooses to challenge me.

Duh, it took me forty years to figure that out?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was a lesson that was totally worth the wait.

Have an awesome weekend you guys.

Do you celebrate enough of the small wins in life or are you (like I have been) too busy focusing on where you need to get to, to truly appreciate how far you have come? Be honest with yourself!
