A Special Mothers Day Giveaway - No its not a Clay Ashtray!

Pin It Yesterday my 5 year old came home from kindy with a big smile on his face and his little hands tightly clutching a gift he had "speshally" picked out for me at the Mother's Day Shop.

He handed it over to me and with eyes as wide as can be, stood there and stared at me. A little confused I gave him a big hug and told him I can't wait to open it on Mother's Day.

"No mummy you open it now cause I'm giving it to you now"

Patiently I tried to explain to him that on Sunday morning - on Mothers Day, he can come in and give it to me in bed and we will open it together.

"Well sometimes I just don't like that!"

I looked at him and watched as his bottom lip trembled and said "But that's what we do huni, you bought it for me today to give to me on Mothers Day".

"Well I just don't really like that idea sometimes" was his shaky response and I could see the tears welling in his eyes showing his obvious disappointment that I wasn't ripping into his present right here right now with feverish delight.

We negotiated and we agreed that I would take a little peak at the picture and we would carefully unwrap a corner of the pressie to have a bit of a sneak preview. He was happy with that and satisfied with my display of over the top gushing excitement at was inside that little parcel (not that I could actually tell what it was from the small corner we opened) and I promised that I would totally act all surprised on Sunday morning when he officially gives it to me.

It got me thinking about all the Mother's Day presents I gave my mum as a little girl. The numerous hankies, painted rock paper weights, a minimalistic nail stuck in a block of wood bill catcher, and numerous clay ashtrays. Yup clay ashtrays, cause didn't everyone make clay ashtrays when you were given a lump of clay to transform into a gift? Can you imagine the uproar that would take place these days if your child dared to make a clay ashtray at school?

But my mum, bless her, still has the majority of these little gifts in her dining room buffet (I know cause I saw them when I was initialing all the things I want to inherit one day), just like I too have a box upstairs that is slowly collecting my own prized stash of painted macaroni necklaces and bookmarks.

I love those little gifts - the ones the kids have made themselves or lovingly chosen for me from the Mother's Day stall. I drink out of my Yummy Mummy Mug everyday and Daddy even has a Cool Daddy Mug to match that he received for Fathers Day.

That being said, as an adult woman I don't think I could get away with grabbing a rock from the garden and whacking some paint on it before wrapping it up as yet another paperweight for my own mum. She has quite a collection already and besides, its not even that windy in her home office.
